Represented by Denmark from 1 July 1875; independent member from 15 November 1919.
In 1903 the Icelandic Post Office omitted to send examples of the stamps and postal stationery locally overprinted "I GILDI ’02–‘03" to the Danish Post Office for onwards transmission to the UPU for distribution to members. By the time the error had been noticed there were no longer sufficient stocks to meet the requirement.
In 1904 a further printing of the postal cards was made. These were sent to Iceland to be overprinted. On this later printing the space between the two lines of the overprint is 4,5mm as compared to 5,2, 5,7 or 7,25mm on the original printing.
